In February, HP released two new A4 single-function color inkjet printers in the United States. The Officejet Pro X451dn prints 55 pages per minute (ppm) in black and white and color and has a maximum monthly duty cycle of 50,000 pages, while the X551dw has a print speed of 70 ppm and a 75,000-page monthly duty cycle. These new desktop high-speed inkjets are among the fastest to date thanks to HP's PageWide Technology, which features a new generation of page-wide print heads based on Scalable Print Technology. The new Officejet Pro printers come with standard automatic duplexing as well as a paper capacity of 500 sheets, which is expandable to 1,050 sheets with the addition of an optional 500-sheet tray. The machines have a maximum print resolution of 1,200-by-600 dpi when printing monochrome and 2,400-by-600 dpi in color. All of the machines ship with built-in Ethernet connectivity, and the devices are also capable of mobile printing. The "w" models also support wireless connectivity. In addition to launching the new machines in the U.S., HP released the X451dw printer in some Asian and EMEA nations. This printer shares many features with the X451dn, including a 2-inch monochrome screen, but adds wireless connectivity.

Summary

In February, HP released two new A4 single-function color inkjet printers in the United States. The Officejet Pro X451dn prints 55 pages per minute (ppm) in black and white and color and has a maximum monthly duty cycle of 50,000 pages, while the X551dw has a print speed of 70 ppm and a 75,000-page monthly duty cycle.  These new desktop high-speed inkjets are among fastest to date thanks to HP's PageWide Technology, which features a new generation of page-wide print heads based on Scalable Print Technology. All of the machines ship with built-in Ethernet connectivity and the devices are also capable of mobile printing.  The "w" models also support wireless connectivity. In addition to launching the new machines in the U.S., HP released the X451dw printer in some Asian and EMEA nations. This printer shares many features with the X451dn, including a 2-inch monochrome screen, but adds wireless connectivity.

These first machines in HP’s Officejet Pro X line employ a new fully-pigmented, four-color ink set in a new set of high and low yield SKUs. The standard-yield HP 970 black ink tank prints 3,000 pages, while the high-yield HP 970 XL black SKU is rated at 9,200 pages. The individual color ink tanks (HP 971) each have a yield of 2,500 pages, while each high-yield color SKU (HP 971XL) prints 6,600 pages. The best CPP of the ink tanks only is 1.30 cents in black and 6.75 cents in color when printing with the XL tanks. The CPP figures are competitive with other business-class inkjet machines.

The X451dn and X551dw have price tags of $449 and $599, respectively, and are available now in North America. The X451dw will be available in North America in June 2013 with an MSRP of $499. The new printers are competitive with Epson’s business-class WorkForce Pro WP-4090, which is a slower device. The OfficeJet Pro printers are likely to be compared with Memjet-powered desktop office machines like the C6010 single-function printer. The Memjet machines lack of automatic duplexing, however, and employ a dye-based ink set. The Memjet printer has a higher MSRP, which we suspect will give HP a competitive advantage.
