Summary

Canon imageCLASS MF5850dn and MF5880dnCanon is targeting small businesses and workgroups in the enterprise space with its new imageCLASS MF5800 monochrome MFP family. The new MF5800 line, which initially includes the MF5850dn and MF5880dn, will be sold exclusively through Canon's reseller channel. Both units support print speeds up to 30 pages per minute and provide print, copy, scan, and fax functionality. The MF5800 units ship with standard duplexing and Ethernet connectivity and an optional wireless interface is available. The machines also provide IT teams with technology to track and control device usage as well as tools for document management.

The new MF5850dn and MF5880dn are virtually identical but the higher-end unit is bundled with more software. The MF5880dn is the first Canon imageCLASS model approved by SAP AG to run within an SAP landscape. While both machines feature Canon’s proprietary host-based printer language, UFRII-LT, the MF5880 also supports PCL printing. Both units allow documents to be scanned directly to a USB flash drive in the Hi-Compression PDF mode and using the fax forwarding mode users can forward incoming faxes and internet fax documents to an e-mail address, network folder, or another fax number. With the MF5880dn's more advanced sending capabilities, users can also scan and send documents directly to an e-mail or network folder.

The MF5800 series share the same new Canon toner cartridge, which features an integrated imaging drum. The new Canon 119 cartridge has page yield of 2,100 pages and lists for $87. The per page costs are just over 4 cents per page, which is high for a monochrome laser MFP with a price tag in the $1,000 neighborhood. We could expect to see the cost per page to be in the 2 to 3 cent range. At 4 cents, the MF5800 machines have operating costs closer to SOHO inkjet all-in-ones or personal lasers. It would make sense for Canon to offer a higher-yield cartridge to make the machines more competitive in terms of operating costs.
