 The Canon PIXMA MX870 Wireless Home Office All-In-One is a higher-end printing solution targeting the small office and home (SOHO) market. The machine offers 9,600 x 2,400 dpi color resolution for photo printing and a standard 35-sheet automatic document feeder. It also features auto duplex printing and various security features, including software to create password protected PDFs. The MX870 has an Ethernet interface and supports wireless printing from various devices including compatible iPhone 3G, 3GS and iPod Touch devices thanks to the new Easy-PhotoPrint for iPhone App, which is available for free in the app store. The machine has a 2.5" LCD to support other computer-less printing as well as compatible memory cards slots, PictBridge technology, and optional Bluetooth.
The MX870 employs four Chromalife100+ dye-based color inks and a pigmented black ink formulated for the dye-based color ink set. The PGI-220 and CLI-221 are individual ink tanks that feed the MX870's permanent print head, which is based on Canon's FINE technology. The head is capable of firing 1 picoliter ink droplets. Canon positions its MX870 as a small office device. It has some of the features that office users would require such as Ethernet connectivity and duplexing. It also has a 150-sheet input tray and a 150-sheet auto feeder for decent input capacity although more would be required for a workgroup. The big draw back to the machine is its dye-based color inks, which are not appropriate for business applications. Offices require more permanent pigmented inks that can withstand exposure to moisture without smearing. The machine will be more popular with home users and home office applications. |
