Summary

Canon PIXMA MX340 and MX350The PIXMA MX340 and MX350 sit toward the bottom of Canon's inkjet all-in-one lineup and provide print, copy, scan, and fax functionality. The machines are targeted at SOHO applications and support wireless printing, copying, and scanning. End-users can also print photos and other output directly from their iPhones and iTouch units, as well as G3 enabled devices. The higher-end MX350 provides a 2.5-inch high-resolution LCD screen to support host-free printing, while the lower-end MX340 sports a full dot matrix LCD screen. Both units feature a 30-sheet automatic document feeder and provide security features so that end-users can create password protected PDFs.

Canon's latest inkjet all-in-ones feature the Chromalife100+ dye-based color inks that debuted in 2008 along with the pigmented black ink formulated for the dye-baed color ink set. The PG-210 and CL-211 SKUs are integrated cartridges that feature Canon's FINE print heads, which can jet droplets that range from 2 to 5 picoliters. OEMs typically deploy cartridges with integrated heads in lower-end machines that will be used in low-volume print environments. Integrated cartridges brings down the overall price of the device by eliminating more expensive components such as a long-life print head and its attendant ink feed system.

Canon claims that these new low-end all-in-ones are for the office, but with the high operating costs these machines demand, it is unlikely they will featured in many office environments. The machines also lack the fully-pigmented inks that office user demand and they have limited input paper capacity. These devices are really consumer units.
